Why You Should Apply on Tuesday (and Not on Monday)

We analyzed over a million applications from the past year through our platform Recruit Connect. Not to create a report that no one reads, but because we were curious: are there patterns? And if so, what can you, as a job seeker, do with them? The short answer: yes, there are patterns. And some are quite surprising.

Monday is busy. Too busy.

Most applications come in on Monday. It's logical. You start the week, you have good intentions, you open that job posting you saved on Friday. But thousands of others do the same. The result: recruiters are overwhelmed with applications on Monday, and the chance that your CV gets the attention it deserves is simply smaller.

It's different on Tuesday. The volume is lower, but recruiters are most active then. They've processed the Monday pile and have time to really look at new applications. If you want someone to look at your CV for more than three seconds, Tuesday is your day. Preferably between 11 and 12 o'clock.

80,000 Night Owls

One of the most striking numbers from the data: nearly 80,000 applications came in between midnight and six in the morning. These are people who think in the middle of the night "you know what, I'll just apply". Whether it's smart to write a cover letter at three in the morning, I leave in the middle, but it says something about how the application process has changed. It's no longer something you do behind your laptop during office hours. It happens on the couch, in bed, on your phone.

1 in 280

On average, 1 in 280 applications leads to an actual hire. That sounds discouraging, but it doesn't tell the whole story. That ratio is heavily influenced by popular vacancies that receive hundreds of responses. There are plenty of vacancies where the number of applicants is much lower, and your chances are therefore considerably better.

The most important insight: don't give up after a few rejections. Most people stop too soon. And the fastest hire we saw in the data? The same day. From application to contract in a few hours. It can also go very quickly.

What Does This Mean for You?

A few practical tips based on what the data shows:

  • Apply on Tuesday or Wednesday, preferably in the morning
  • Avoid Monday morning if possible, you're competing with the highest volume of the week
  • Make sure your application is mobile-friendly, more and more people are applying via their phone
  • Don't be discouraged by rejections, it's a numbers game, but timing and quality help

These are not guarantees. But if you're going to apply anyway, you might as well choose the moment when you have the best chance.
